Old Akko · since 2019

Fish from the morning boats, cooked over olive-wood coals

Akko Ember is a thirty-two-seat grill on the port wall. We buy at the harbour before nine, light the charcoal at noon and cook what the boats brought in, simply and over real fire.

How we cook

Three rules we have kept since the first night

01

Only what landed today

The menu is written after the harbour, not before. If the boats come back light, the board is shorter.

02

Olive wood, never gas

Charcoal from pruned Galilee olive trees burns hot and clean and gives the skin a faint sweetness.

03

Nothing hides the fish

Lemon, salt, tahini, herbs from the market. Sauces arrive on the side so you decide.

The wall

Eat with the bay in front of you

Twelve tables stand along the Crusader-era sea wall, close enough to hear the water against the stones. From April to November the wall is where most guests sit; in winter we move inside to the vaulted hall.

Wall tables are booked in two sittings at sunset. Ask for the corner table when you call — it looks straight down the harbour mouth.

“We came for one dinner and returned the next night. The fish tasted like it had been in the sea that morning — because it had.”
